Tinley Park, IL – Kohl’s is stepping up its sustainability efforts in Illinois, launching rooftop solar projects at three of its stores in partnership with renewable energy developer Verogy. The installations, located in Bourbonnais, Effingham, and Tinley Park, are projected to generate enough clean power to offset millions of miles driven by gasoline vehicles each year.

According to Verogy, nearly 2,700 solar panels will be installed across the three sites, producing more than 1.85 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity annually — the equivalent of powering 170 homes per year. The systems are expected to offset 1,215 metric tons of carbon dioxide (CO₂), roughly the same as eliminating more than 3 million miles driven by average gas-powered cars.

The new Illinois projects build on a successful collaboration between Kohl’s and Verogy, following three completed rooftop systems at Arizona stores in 2023. Verogy CEO Will Herchel said the Illinois installations highlight the retailer’s ongoing commitment to renewable energy expansion nationwide.

“It’s been a privilege to work with Kohl’s over the years,” Herchel said. “These projects will generate substantial clean energy while reinforcing Kohl’s leadership in corporate sustainability.”

West Hartford–based Verogy develops and manages commercial and utility-scale solar projects across more than 20 states. Since its founding, the company has helped produce over 200,000 megawatt-hours of renewable energy through projects that support businesses and communities seeking lower-carbon solutions.
