Kankakee, IL – A 13-year-old is in custody after allegedly crashing a stolen vehicle into a Kankakee County Sheriff’s Office squad car Friday afternoon.

According to the Kankakee County Sheriff’s Office, deputies attempted to stop a vehicle reported stolen earlier that morning on Eastgate Parkway at approximately 1:39 p.m. The juvenile driver allegedly struck both the rear and side of a marked sheriff’s squad car during the encounter.

The sheriff’s office reported that two deputies were inside the squad car at the time. They sustained minor injuries, were treated at a local hospital, and later released. Paramedics evaluated the juvenile at the scene before police took the child into custody on charges of Possession of a Stolen Motor Vehicle and Attempted Fleeing and Eluding Police.

Sheriff Mike Downey said the incident highlighted growing concerns with juvenile crime in the area. “It is extremely concerning that a 13-year-old was not only in possession of a stolen vehicle but brazen enough to attempt to flee from law enforcement in the middle of the day,” Downey stated. He added that while deputies avoided serious injuries, the situation underscores “the troubling lack of accountability and respect for the law that we continue to see.”

Authorities confirmed the juvenile has been released from medical care but remains in police custody. The investigation into the theft and subsequent crash is ongoing.
