Illinois and Iowa start the morning under a gray sky, where damp pavement and a thin glaze threaten traction.

Across eastern Iowa and northwest Illinois, a Weather Alert remains in effect for the Quad Cities region as patchy freezing drizzle develops early today. Temperatures hover near 36 degrees, but colder pockets north and east of Davenport allow drizzle to freeze on untreated roads. Side streets, bridges, and ramps may turn slick quickly.

The risk increases around daybreak. Light freezing rain lingers briefly, then fades. While ice amounts stay minimal, even a light glaze can change driving conditions fast. Commuters should slow down and allow extra braking distance, especially along I-80, I-74, and U.S. 61.

By mid-morning, attention shifts to the wind. Northwest winds strengthen through late morning, with sustained speeds near 20 to 25 mph and gusts up to 35 mph. Those gusts can push vehicles sideways and dry pavement unevenly. After all, February ice often hides in shaded spots.

Clouds hold through much of the day. Highs reach near 39 degrees, helping improve conditions by afternoon. Still, loose objects may move around as winds peak.

Tonight turns colder and quieter. Skies clear and lows drop near 13 degrees, allowing any leftover moisture to refreeze. Watch for isolated slick patches late tonight and early Saturday.

Saturday brings calmer weather. Clouds increase with highs near 31 degrees. Sunday improves further, with sunshine and highs near 44 degrees, offering a brief winter break.

Looking ahead, early next week trends warmer. Monday climbs into the mid-50s, with mild air holding into midweek. Meteorologists continue tracking a broader warming pattern across the Midwest.

For now, take the morning slowly. Expect quick changes before conditions improve.
