Illinois and Iowa are feeling more like late April than mid-February, but the wind whipping across the Mississippi River is raising real concerns this morning. Dry grass bends under steady southeast winds, and any spark could spread fast.
Temperatures climb into the mid-60s today across the Quad Cities, including Davenport and Moline. Southeast winds increase to 15 mph this afternoon, with gusts reaching 35 mph. Some locations may see occasional gusts near 40 to 45 mph, especially along and east of the river. Outdoor burning should be avoided.
According to the National Weather Service in the Quad Cities, very high fire danger is expected today and again Wednesday. Warm temperatures, dry fuels and gusty winds create prime conditions for rapid fire spread.
A slight chance of sprinkles develops after mid-afternoon. Showers and a few thunderstorms become possible late tonight into early Wednesday, with a 40 percent chance. Lows settle near 49 degrees.
Wednesday turns sunny and breezy, with highs near 66 and west winds gusting to 30 mph. Fire danger remains elevated. By Thursday, a 50 percent chance of showers returns after 1 p.m., with highs near 62.
Rain lingers into Thursday night as temperatures fall toward 31 degrees. Colder air arrives Friday, with highs near 42 under partly sunny skies. Any leftover moisture could refreeze by Friday night as lows drop into the mid-20s. Watch for slick bridges on I-74 and I-80 during early weekend travel.
Saturday looks mostly sunny with highs near 40, followed by colder nights. The 6–10 day outlook favors above-normal temperatures returning next week, hinting at early spring warmth across eastern Iowa and western Illinois. Are you ready for one more winter swing before spring vibes take hold?
