Illinois–Iowa – Snowflakes drift lightly across bridges and riverfront roads this morning, clinging to windshields as traffic hums along the Mississippi. The calm look won’t last. A quick-moving winter system is setting up a stretch of snow, gusty winds, and colder air heading into the weekend.

According to the National Weather Service in the Quad Cities, a clipper system moves through the region later today into tonight. Light snow spreads across eastern Iowa and western Illinois, with totals generally ranging from a half inch to near one inch. While amounts stay modest, falling temperatures may allow slick spots to form quickly on untreated roads.

Friday brings another round of snow showers as a second clipper crosses the area. Winds turn gusty, helping reduce visibility during the afternoon and evening. Drivers along I-80, I-74, and U.S. 61 should be prepared for brief bursts of snow and changing road conditions, especially near bridges and ramps.

Colder air settles in behind the snow. Saturday and Sunday trend dry but sharply colder, with highs struggling in the teens and lower 20s. Overnight lows dip into the single digits. Any snowmelt during the day may refreeze after sunset, raising the risk for black ice.

Residents should plan extra travel time Friday, keep headlights on during snow showers, and slow down when visibility drops. Keep winter gear handy, check vehicle fluids, and dress for biting wind chills if heading outdoors.

Looking ahead, winter stays in control early next week, though sunshine offers little warmth. Additional weak systems may return later, keeping the pattern active.
