Illinois and Iowa start the day locked in a deep winter chill as arctic air tightens its grip across the Quad Cities. The cold hits fast. Metal burns to the touch, engines strain, and even brief trips outside feel punishing.
According to the National Weather Service in the Quad Cities, a Cold Weather Advisory remains in effect until noon CST today. Wind chills between 20 and 30 degrees below zero are expected across eastern Iowa and northwest Illinois, including Davenport, Rock Island, Moline, and Bettendorf. Frostbite can develop on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes.
Temperatures early this morning hover near -1°F, while steady northwest winds push wind chills close to -17°F. Roads are mostly dry, but lingering snow and blowing powder can reduce visibility at times. Slick patches remain possible on untreated roads, bridges, and ramps, especially along I-80 and I-74.
Drivers should allow extra time, keep emergency supplies in vehicles, and avoid prolonged exposure outdoors. Pets should remain indoors, and residents are urged to check on older neighbors during the coldest hours.
Conditions slowly improve later today as winds ease. Sunshine helps temperatures climb to around 6°F, though it will still feel dangerously cold. Tonight remains frigid, with lows near -6°F.
Relief arrives early this week. Monday stays cold but brighter, with highs near 29°F. By Tuesday, temperatures rebound sharply into the upper 30s, beginning a noticeable December thaw. That warm-up may melt snow during the day, then refreeze overnight, increasing the risk of black ice during early-morning travel.
Midweek stays quieter, with highs near 40°F before rain chances return late Wednesday night.
With Christmas travel approaching, winter hazards remain a daily concern. Bundle up today and stay alert for icy roads as temperatures swing sharply this week.
