Illinois – Dark water presses against riverbanks this morning as the Rock River continues to rise near Moline, creeping into low-lying areas and threatening rapid changes along the shoreline. Ice jams add another layer of uncertainty as the New Year begins across the Quad Cities.

According to the National Weather Service in the Quad Cities, a Flood Warning remains in effect for the Rock River at Moline through Monday afternoon. River levels are hovering near 13 feet, which meets moderate flood stage. Ice jams make conditions especially unpredictable, with water levels capable of rising quickly in localized spots.

Floodwaters are already affecting portions of South Shore Drive and nearby access points east of the I-74 Bridge. Vandruff Island remains impacted, and water has reached areas near 49th Avenue south of the riverfront. Motorists are urged to avoid barricaded roads and never drive through flooded sections, even if water appears shallow.

Cold temperatures today keep ice intact along the river, increasing the risk of sudden shifts. Conditions stay dry and mostly sunny, with highs near the upper 20s, offering no immediate relief to river levels. Calm weather continues into Friday and Saturday, allowing flooding to persist rather than drain.

By the weekend, highs climb into the low to mid-30s, and slow improvement is possible. However, officials warn that ice movement could still trigger short-lived surges. Anyone near riverbanks should use caution, as footing can collapse without warning.

Looking ahead, temperatures trend warmer early next week, which may finally help water levels recede after cresting. Until then, residents should stay alert for updated statements and be prepared to move to higher ground if conditions change.
