Peoria, IL – A Red Flag Warning remains in effect until 8 p.m. CDT Monday across west-central Illinois and eastern Iowa, as strong winds and low humidity create dangerous fire conditions. Officials are urging residents to avoid outdoor burning due to the heightened risk of rapid fire spread.
According to the National Weather Service, the affected areas include Knox, Stark, Peoria, Marshall, Woodford, Fulton, Tazewell, Schuyler, Mason, Cass, Scott, and Morgan counties in Illinois. In Iowa and northwest Illinois, Buchanan, Dubuque, Linn, Jackson, Muscatine, Rock Island, and several other counties are also under the warning.
Forecasters report sustained south to southwest winds of 15 to 25 mph, with gusts reaching up to 45 mph. Combined with relative humidity as low as 25% and dry ground conditions, any fire that ignites could spread uncontrollably.
The National Weather Service strongly advises against any outdoor burning, as fires may be difficult to contain. Residents should secure loose outdoor materials and remain vigilant for any signs of fire.
Temperatures in the region are expected to reach around 70 degrees, further contributing to fire-prone conditions. The warning is set to expire at 8 p.m., but officials urge continued caution beyond that time.
