Quad Cities, IA/IL – Damaging winds and frequent lightning could hit parts of the Illinois-Iowa border Tuesday evening, with a few strong thunderstorms possible until 1 a.m. Wednesday, especially along a line from Dubuque to Cedar Rapids.
According to the National Weather Service in the Quad Cities, a marginal risk (level 1 of 5) for severe weather exists for the area, with a 10–20% chance of thunderstorms late this evening into tonight. Storms are most likely northwest of the Quad Cities, including parts of Cedar Rapids, Dubuque, and stretching into Illinois border communities. Timing is expected between 6 p.m. and 1 a.m. CDT, with isolated damaging wind gusts, heavy rain, and frequent lightning all possible. Forecasters also note a low but non-zero risk for brief, isolated tornadoes.
Travelers on major highways like I-80 and US-61 should stay alert for sudden weather changes, ponding on roads, and minor flooding in low-lying spots. Power outages are possible with strong wind gusts. Residents in Iowa City, Bettendorf, and Moline are urged to have multiple ways to receive warnings, especially if severe weather strikes overnight. If thunder roars, head indoors immediately and avoid travel if storms intensify.
Uncertainty remains regarding storm coverage and strength, but additional alerts could be issued if conditions worsen. The severe threat should ease by early Wednesday morning.
