Quad Cities, IA/IL – Thick fog is blanketing much of eastern Iowa and northwest Illinois this morning, cutting visibility to under a quarter mile and creating hazardous driving conditions on major routes including I-80, U.S. 61, and U.S. 30.
According to the National Weather Service in the Quad Cities, a Dense Fog Advisory remains in effect until 9 a.m. Sunday, with the fog expected to gradually lift by mid-morning. Affected areas include Cedar Rapids, Dubuque, Iowa City, the Quad Cities, and into western Illinois near Galesburg and Peoria.
Motorists are urged to slow down, use low-beam headlights, and allow extra travel time. Fog-related hazards can escalate quickly, especially in rural or unlit stretches of highway. Law enforcement across Linn, Scott, Johnson, and Rock Island counties are advising drivers to stay alert and increase following distances during morning commutes.
This widespread fog event is common during humid July mornings but still poses serious safety risks, particularly for early travelers and commercial transport routes.
Conditions should improve after 9 a.m., but drivers are encouraged to remain cautious until visibility fully recovers.
