Chicago, Illinois – Snow is set to move across northern and central Illinois this afternoon, bringing several hours of slick roads and slowing the Monday evening commute from Rockford to Kankakee and into northwest Indiana.
According to the National Weather Service in Chicago and Lincoln, Winter Weather Advisories begin as early as noon in central Illinois and expand to the Chicago metro by 2 p.m., with northwest Indiana joining by late afternoon. Most areas will see 2 to 4 inches, though totals near 5 inches are possible south of Interstate 80 and across central Illinois counties such as McLean, Piatt, Champaign, and Coles.
Drivers on I-55, I-57, I-88, and I-90 should expect rapid deterioration once snow begins, particularly during the rush hour window. Roads in Aurora, Joliet, Naperville, Waukegan, DeKalb, and La Salle may become snow-covered by early evening, while communities such as Bloomington, Springfield, and Danville experience heavier, earlier bands.
Illinois and Indiana transportation officials urge motorists to slow down, give plows room, and allow for extended travel times. Bridges, ramps, and untreated secondary roads will turn slick first. Visibility may drop sharply during heavier bursts.
Snow will taper after midnight for most locations, though lingering icy patches could impact early Tuesday travel. Winter Weather Advisories remain in effect through early Tuesday morning.
