Illinois – Rain streaks across windshields and gray clouds hang low over Chicago this morning as a fast-moving storm system sweeps across the region.

Light rain and mist already cover much of the metro area. Temperatures sit near 62 degrees, unusually mild for early March.

Meteorologists are tracking scattered thunderstorms moving through northern Illinois and northwest Indiana. While severe weather risk remains limited, some storms may produce wind gusts up to 50 mph and brief heavy rain.

Drivers across Cook County and the Chicago metro area should expect changing conditions through midday. Wet pavement and gusty winds could slow traffic along Interstate 94, I-55, and Lake Shore Drive.

Heavy bursts of rain may briefly reduce visibility. Plan extra travel time if heading out this morning.

Another developing concern is river flooding south of Chicago.

The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Warning for Thorn Creek near Thornton, where water levels are rising above flood stage. Minor flooding could affect areas near 187th Street in Glenwood through the day.

Officials say the river may crest near 10.1 feet before gradually falling later today.

Conditions should improve later as the storm system pushes east. Rain tapers and skies gradually clear tonight.

The weekend turns noticeably calmer afterward. Sunshine returns Sunday with breezy conditions and highs near 61 degrees.

The warming trend continues into early next week. Monday could reach 65 degrees with bright sunshine, offering a strong taste of spring.

Another round of showers may return by Tuesday as another system approaches the Midwest.

Also remember: Daylight Saving Time begins early Sunday morning, when clocks move forward one hour at 2 a.m.

For now, meteorologists continue monitoring storms and river levels across the Chicago area.
