Kankakee, IL – Gusty southerly winds are kicking up shallow blowing and drifting snow across portions of northern Illinois and northwest Indiana this afternoon, according to the National Weather Service in Chicago/Romeoville.

The advisory, issued around 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, highlights hazardous travel in open areas along west-to-east roadways, especially across Kankakee, Iroquois, and eastern Will counties in Illinois and extending into Lake, Porter, and Newton counties in Indiana.

According to meteorologist Kluber with the National Weather Service, the combination of light snow cover and strong winds is reducing visibility and creating slick patches on untreated roads. Drivers are urged to slow down, keep extra distance between vehicles, and be prepared for sudden icy conditions.

While accumulations remain minimal, even shallow drifting snow can quickly make rural highways and open interstates hazardous—particularly during the late afternoon commute. The statement remains in effect through early evening as winds continue from the south.

Motorists traveling along I-57, U.S. 30, and Route 17 may experience localized whiteout conditions or drifting near fields. Conditions are expected to gradually improve after sunset as winds ease.
