Champaign, Illinois – Drivers along the Illinois-Indiana border face sharply reduced visibility early Monday as dense fog drops sightlines to one quarter mile or less, creating immediate hazards on I-74, I-70 and US-41.
According to the National Weather Service, Dense Fog Advisories remain in effect until 9 a.m. CST in east central Illinois, including Champaign, Danville, Charleston and Effingham, and until 10 a.m. EST in west central Indiana, including Terre Haute, Rockville and Clinton. Visibility may fall below a quarter mile at times, especially in low-lying and rural areas.
In Vermilion, Edgar and Clark counties in Illinois, IDOT crews report variable visibility along I-74 between Champaign-Urbana and the Indiana state line. Across Vigo and Vermillion counties in Indiana, INDOT warns that bridges and overpasses along I-70 and US-41 could develop isolated slick spots where temperatures briefly dip near freezing.
Morning commuters should slow down, use low-beam headlights and leave several car lengths between vehicles. Avoid sudden braking on elevated roadways where moisture can freeze first.
Conditions are expected to gradually improve by mid-morning as temperatures climb and fog lifts, but pockets of low visibility may linger in river valleys. Additional advisories could be issued if visibility fails to improve.
