Chicago, Illinois – Snow squalls may rapidly reduce visibility and create dangerous travel across Illinois and Indiana tonight into Friday night.

According to the National Weather Service Weather Prediction Center, snow showers and snow squalls are expected to develop behind an arctic cold front and spread into the Midwest, including much of Illinois and Indiana. While snowfall totals may be limited, squalls can produce intense bursts of snow, gusty winds, and near-zero visibility within minutes.

Forecasters warn that snow squalls are especially hazardous because conditions can change suddenly on highways and interstates. Drivers may encounter whiteout conditions, icy pavement, and rapidly deteriorating visibility, even where roads were previously clear.

In addition to snow squalls, strong winds are expected outside of squalls, with gusts potentially exceeding 50 to 60 mph across parts of the region. These winds may worsen travel conditions for high-profile vehicles and could lead to scattered power outages, particularly as colder air moves in behind the front.

Motorists who encounter a snow squall are urged to slow down gradually, turn on headlights and hazard lights, and avoid hard braking. Officials advise delaying travel when possible, especially during peak overnight and Friday commute hours.

Commuters, delivery drivers, and students traveling between cities should be prepared for brief but severe travel disruptions, even on major roadways.

The snow squall risk continues through Friday night, with conditions improving only after the cold front fully exits the region.
