Chicago, IL – A Flood Watch is in effect for parts of Illinois and northwest Indiana until 1 PM Wednesday due to excessive rainfall. The National Weather Service warns that flooding may impact central and southern Cook County, Kankakee, and several other Illinois areas, along with northwest Indiana.

According to the National Weather Service, tropical moisture from Hurricane Beryl’s remnants is expected to bring heavy rainfall starting this afternoon through early Wednesday morning. Rainfall rates may be high enough to cause flooding, particularly in poor drainage areas such as roadways, ditches, and fields. Creeks and streams may rise out of their banks, and significant river rises are possible where rain is heaviest.

The affected areas in Illinois include Central Cook, Eastern Will, Ford, Grundy, Iroquois, Kankakee, Livingston, Northern Cook, Northern Will, Southern Cook, and Southern Will counties. In Indiana, Benton, Jasper, Lake, Newton, and Porter counties are under watch.

Forecasters predict bands of heavy rain, with some areas potentially receiving several inches of rain within a short period. This could lead to flash flooding in urban areas and near rivers and streams. Residents in low-lying and flood-prone areas should be prepared for possible evacuations and take precautions to protect property.

The remnants of Hurricane Beryl are expected to move northeastward, with the heaviest rainfall occurring late Tuesday into early Wednesday. Motorists should exercise caution and avoid driving through flooded roads. For more information and safety tips, visit the National Weather Service website at www.weather.gov/safety/flood.
