Louisville, Kentucky – Drivers and residents across western Kentucky could face dangerous flash flooding through Saturday evening as intense thunderstorms drench the region with heavy rainfall.

According to the NOAA Weather Prediction Center, portions of southern Illinois, Indiana, and western Kentucky have been upgraded to a Moderate Risk for excessive rainfall today—highlighted in red on the latest hazard maps. Cities like Owensboro, Madisonville, and Bowling Green fall squarely within the high-impact zone, where additional rainfall could overwhelm streets, creeks, and drainage systems.

Urban areas, low-lying roads, and small streams are most vulnerable. In Louisville, runoff from repeated downpours could flood underpasses and disrupt travel into the evening hours. Emergency responders urge caution near flood-prone spots, including US-60, KY-81, and Interstate 69. Flash flooding can occur rapidly—often with little warning.

Residents should avoid driving through flooded roads, charge mobile devices, and monitor local alerts. If your area is prone to basement flooding or poor drainage, take immediate steps to prepare.

Thunderstorms are expected to linger into the night, with flash flood watches possibly expanding eastward. A final round of storms may develop around 9 p.m., with rainfall totals exceeding 3 inches in some spots.
