Indianapolis, IN – With temperatures soaring, the Indiana and Lake County, Illinois health departments have issued crucial warnings to protect residents from the sun’s harmful effects.
According to the Indiana Department of Health, residents should take several precautions to avoid heat exhaustion and sunburn. Key recommendations include avoiding direct sun exposure between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., applying sunscreen with a high SPF, wearing protective clothing such as hats and sunglasses, and staying well-hydrated. The department also advises scheduling outdoor activities during cooler parts of the day to minimize risk.
Meanwhile, the Lake County Health Department in Illinois is also urging residents to be vigilant about sun safety. They recommend staying in the shade whenever possible, wearing long-sleeved shirts and long pants made from tightly woven fabric, and using broad-spectrum sunscreen that filters both UVA and UVB rays. Sunscreen should be reapplied every two hours, especially after swimming or sweating.
Both health departments underscore the importance of these measures to prevent sunburn, heatstroke, and skin cancer. UV rays are most intense from late morning to mid-afternoon and can be particularly dangerous during heatwaves.
Residents are encouraged to stay informed about the UV index in their area and take appropriate precautions. For more detailed information on sun safety, visit the Indiana Department of Health and Lake County Health Department websites.
