Chicago, Illinois – Residents along the Illinois-Indiana border have a narrow window to prepare as fast-moving thunderstorms threaten to snap tree limbs and disrupt power between 3 p.m. and 9 p.m. Thursday, with the highest impact expected near I-80 and surrounding communities.

According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, storms will rapidly develop Thursday afternoon and intensify along and south of the Illinois-Indiana state line. Forecasters say damaging wind gusts and hail larger than 2 inches are the primary threats, especially in areas including Kankakee, Joliet, Hammond, Gary, and down toward Lafayette.

The storm line will push east at 40 to 50 mph, creating sudden hazards for drivers on I-80, I-65, and I-94 during peak commute hours. Brief whiteout rain, falling debris, and isolated power outages could develop quickly as storms strengthen.

Communities along the border should secure loose outdoor items, avoid unnecessary travel during peak storm timing, and ensure phones and emergency alerts are active. Even a short-lived storm could produce significant damage in localized areas.

The exact placement of the strongest storms may shift slightly depending on the timing of a cold front, but warnings are likely as conditions intensify Thursday evening.
