Carbondale, Ill. – Early morning storms are threatening parts of southern Illinois and southwest Indiana with damaging winds and large hail as a Severe Thunderstorm Watch remains in effect until 9 a.m. CDT Friday.

According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, the watch includes ten Illinois counties—Alexander, Gallatin, Hardin, Johnson, Massac, Pope, Pulaski, Saline, Union, and Williamson—and stretches east into six Indiana counties, including Vanderburgh, Warrick, and Posey.

The storms are capable of producing wind gusts up to 60 mph and quarter-sized hail. Residents in impacted areas are urged to secure loose outdoor items, remain indoors during lightning, and monitor local alerts for real-time updates. Morning travel may be affected, particularly along Interstates 24 and 57, as visibility could drop quickly in heavy downpours.

Power outages and minor tree damage are possible, especially in more rural or forested areas. Schools and early commuters in Carbondale, Harrisburg, and Paducah’s northern suburbs should prepare for delays or hazardous driving.

This watch follows a pattern of active spring weather across the region. Additional storm development is possible later in the day.

Warnings remain in effect through 9 a.m., and more alerts may be issued if conditions intensify.
