Carbondale, IL – Drivers traveling through southern Illinois should prepare for delays as a major closure on Interstate 57 is set to begin this week.

According to the Illinois Department of Transportation, all southbound lanes of I-57 between exit 30 and exit 45 will shut down to traffic starting at 7 p.m. Wednesday for emergency guardrail and pavement repairs. The affected stretch runs through Williamson and Union counties.

A posted detour will redirect drivers to eastbound I-24 near Marion, while northbound I-57 lanes will remain open. The work is expected to be completed by 7 a.m. Thursday, with the roadway fully reopened by the morning commute.

Officials are urging motorists to seek alternative routes and remain alert in the area. Drivers should obey posted speed limits, avoid using mobile devices, and watch for flaggers and digital message boards throughout the work zone.

The closure is necessary to complete urgent repairs following recent infrastructure assessments. For real-time updates, drivers can visit GettingAroundIllinois.com or follow IDOT District 9 on social media.
