Chicago, Illinois – A dangerous stretch of oppressive heat is gripping Illinois this weekend, with heat indices soaring past 100°F across Chicago and nearby suburbs and little relief expected through at least Monday night.
According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, daytime heat indices will reach 97–105°F across much of northern Illinois, including Cook, Lake, DuPage, and Will counties. Overnight lows will struggle to drop below 78–80°F, especially in urban areas, keeping conditions hazardous around the clock. The heat may linger into Tuesday depending on the timing of incoming thunderstorms Monday night.
The hottest conditions are expected Sunday and Monday, with peak afternoon indices near 103°F in Chicago and Rockford. Humidity will remain high throughout the period, contributing to heat stress and increasing risk of heat-related illness. Officials urge residents to stay in air conditioning, limit outdoor activity during peak hours, and check on vulnerable neighbors and pets.
Heat impacts will be felt statewide, especially in cities like Aurora, Joliet, Waukegan, and Kankakee. The National Weather Service warns this is the first prolonged, dangerous heat stretch since August 2020.
Relief may come midweek, but heat alerts remain in effect through Monday evening. Additional advisories could be issued based on storm development.
