Springfield, Illinois – Oppressive heat and dangerous humidity levels are gripping Central and Southeast Illinois this week, with heat indices nearing 100 degrees and afternoon highs in the lower to mid-90s. A Heat Advisory remains in effect through Thursday evening, posing a major health risk, especially for those without access to air conditioning.

According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, extreme heat is expected to peak between 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. each day, with dew points climbing into the 70s. The combination of high temperatures and humidity places much of the population at risk for heat-related illness without adequate hydration and cooling.

Residents in Springfield, Decatur, Champaign, and surrounding counties should limit outdoor activity, wear light-colored clothing, and stay in air-conditioned spaces when possible. Hydration and frequent breaks are strongly advised for anyone working outside.

This stretch of excessive heat follows a trend of early summer temperature spikes, putting stress on vulnerable populations and utility systems. Local emergency managers urge residents to check on neighbors and seniors and avoid exertion during the hottest hours.

The Heat Advisory remains active through 7 p.m. Thursday, with possible extensions depending on conditions.
