Springfield, Ill. – Much of central and eastern Illinois will swelter under a dangerous heat advisory Monday, with heat index values soaring up to 110°F by mid-afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, the advisory is in effect from noon to 8 p.m. CDT Monday across more than 30 counties, including Peoria, Springfield, Bloomington, Decatur, and Danville. High humidity combined with air temperatures in the 90s could lead to heat-related illnesses without proper precautions.
Residents in counties like Champaign, Macon, Tazewell, and Vermilion are urged to limit outdoor activity, especially during peak heat hours. Air-conditioned spaces, hydration, and regular checks on vulnerable neighbors are essential. The heat index could pose added risks for outdoor workers, seniors, and young children.
This advisory also includes rural areas such as Shelbyville, Flora, and Petersburg, where heat relief may be harder to access. Local emergency management teams recommend delaying non-essential travel and avoiding strenuous outdoor tasks until after sunset.
The extreme heat is expected to ease Monday night, but more alerts may follow if high temperatures persist into the week. Stay tuned to NWS updates and local alerts for evolving conditions.
