Chicago, IL – Health officials are warning Illinois residents to take precautions as tick activity increases across the state, raising concerns about the spread of potentially serious illnesses.

According to the Illinois Department of Public Health, ticks are currently active statewide and can carry diseases such as Lyme disease and alpha-gal syndrome, a condition that can trigger allergic reactions to red meat. Officials say the risk is heightened during outdoor activities like hiking, gardening, and foraging.

Ticks are not selective about where they attach and can latch onto people, pets, and clothing. Health experts emphasize that even brief exposure to wooded areas, tall grass, or leaf litter can increase the likelihood of a tick bite.

Residents are encouraged to take preventative measures, including using insect repellents, wearing light-colored clothing to spot ticks more easily, and tucking pants into socks when walking in high-risk areas. Staying in the center of trails and avoiding brush and tall grass can also reduce exposure.

Officials also stress the importance of daily tick checks after spending time outdoors. This includes checking children, pets, and clothing. Showering soon after coming indoors and washing or drying clothes on high heat can help remove ticks before they attach.

If a tick is found, it should be removed promptly using fine-tipped tweezers. Health experts advise monitoring for symptoms such as rash, fever, or flu-like illness in the days following a bite.

Anyone experiencing symptoms after a tick bite is urged to contact a healthcare provider for evaluation and possible treatment.

Public health officials continue to monitor tick populations and remind residents that awareness and prevention remain the most effective tools in reducing tick-borne illnesses.
