Springfield, IL – The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) is calling attention to the growing threat of drug-resistant infections as the state observes U.S. Antibiotic Awareness Week, which runs November 18–24. This year, IDPH is recognizing nearly 90 Illinois hospitals for their work to slow antimicrobial resistance and improve antibiotic stewardship practices.

According to IDPH, Governor JB Pritzker issued a statewide proclamation and recorded a message encouraging Illinoisans to learn when antibiotics and antifungal medications are appropriate. The agency noted that improper or unnecessary use of these medications can allow germs to adapt and become harder to treat.

“Antibiotics are powerful medicines, but they can stop working if we don’t use them correctly,” said IDPH Director Dr. Sameer Vohra. “When antibiotics are taken for illnesses they can’t treat—like colds, flu, RSV or COVID-19—bacteria learn to fight back. This week, we’re celebrating nearly 90 Illinois hospitals for leading the way in using these medicines wisely.”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that the United States sees more than 2.8 million antimicrobial-resistant infections every year, resulting in over 35,000 deaths. Up to 30% of antibiotic prescriptions nationwide are considered unnecessary.

IDPH created the Acute Care Antimicrobial Stewardship Honor Roll to spotlight hospitals implementing best practices. Awards are given at Bronze, Silver, and Gold levels based on six priority areas, including leadership commitment, designated stewardship experts, treatment guidelines, tracking antibiotic use and reporting back to prescribers. Nearly 90 Illinois hospitals earned recognition in 2025, and 24 others received a Collaboration Distinction for partnership-based efforts that extend across multiple care settings.

IDPH also urges the public to take preventive steps that reduce the need for antibiotics—including regular handwashing, staying home when sick, covering coughs and sneezes, and keeping up with recommended vaccines.
