Springfield, IL – As Illinois farmers move into peak harvest season, drivers are being urged to slow down and stay alert on rural roads. The Illinois Sheriffs’ Association released a public safety advisory Tuesday reminding motorists and agricultural workers to take extra precautions through the fall.

According to Illinois Sheriffs’ Association Executive Director Jim Kaitschuk, farm equipment traffic increases significantly during harvest, creating hazards on rural routes where vehicles and tractors often share the same lanes. Kaitschuk emphasized that many farm vehicles travel at speeds of just 15 to 20 mph, making it critical for drivers to allow extra space and avoid unsafe passing.

The advisory highlighted several reminders for motorists: slow immediately when spotting farm machinery, increase following distance, and be patient with wide turns. Drivers are also advised to only pass when it is completely safe.

For farmers and agricultural workers, safety measures include ensuring vehicles have proper lighting, monitoring fatigue, watching for electrical hazards, and practicing grain entrapment prevention. The association also noted that tractors equipped with rollover protective structures, combined with seat belts, reduce the risk of fatal overturn accidents by nearly 99%.

Agriculture remains among the most hazardous industries in the United States. The Illinois Department of Labor reported 145 workplace fatalities statewide in 2023, with a substantial share occurring in agriculture. Harvest season is consistently one of the riskiest periods due to increased workloads and longer operating hours.

“Our rural roads and fields are the backbone of Illinois—but they demand respect and care from everyone,” Kaitschuk said. “Drivers slowing down and farmers practicing equipment safety can help ensure a safer harvest season for all.”
