Champaign, Illinois – Thunderstorms could rattle central Illinois by Monday night, with damaging wind gusts and heavy downpours possible from Champaign to Effingham.
According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, scattered thunderstorms are expected to develop after 7 p.m. Monday, especially south of I-70. Some storms could produce torrential rainfall, leading to localized flooding. The strongest cells may bring wind gusts capable of knocking out power or toppling weak trees. While the overall severe threat is low, residents should prepare for quickly changing conditions, especially if driving after dark.
Meanwhile, Monday afternoon will see mostly sunny skies and a high near 87°F. Humidity will push heat index values close to 100°F east of I-57, increasing the risk of heat-related illness during outdoor activities.
From Wednesday through Saturday, daily afternoon storm chances (30-50%) will continue, with the highest risk Wednesday and Friday. These storms will be isolated but capable of dumping heavy rain in short periods. Gusty winds remain possible, particularly with late-week cells.
By Saturday, temperatures will climb toward 88°F with another round of showers and thunderstorms likely. Winds will be light throughout the week, but pop-up storms could still disrupt outdoor plans across Vermilion, Douglas, and Coles counties.
Residents are urged to monitor alerts and avoid flooded roads. Charge devices, secure outdoor furniture, and stay weather-aware into the weekend.
Warnings could be extended if storms intensify or stall.
