Chicago, IL – A flood watch remains in effect for the Chicago metro area and parts of northern Illinois and northwest Indiana until 3 p.m. CST Friday, with heavy rainfall increasing the risk of urban flooding.
According to the National Weather Service, areas including Cook, DuPage, Kane, Will, Kankakee, and Grundy counties, along with parts of Lake and Porter counties in Indiana, could see up to 1.5 inches of rain. Combined with frozen ground and river ice cover, excess water may struggle to drain, heightening the threat of flooding.
Officials warn that creeks and streams could rise out of their banks, and standing water may accumulate in low-lying areas, underpasses, and roadways. Drivers should remain cautious and avoid flooded roads.
Rain is expected to continue through the afternoon before tapering off. Residents are advised to monitor local forecasts and prepare for potential water accumulation in flood-prone areas.
