Effingham, Illinois – Flash flooding continues to threaten parts of southern Shelby and Effingham counties in central Illinois, with up to 4 inches of rain already fallen and up to 3 more inches possible before 4 a.m. Monday. The National Weather Service issued the warning late Sunday night as thunderstorms dumped heavy rain over the area, leading to flash flooding of roads, streams, and underpasses.

According to radar data from the National Weather Service in Lincoln, rainfall rates of 1 to 1.5 inches per hour are expected to persist through early morning, with some localized flooding already occurring. Areas like Effingham, Altamont, and Teutopolis are experiencing the worst conditions, with significant flooding impacting local streets and highways. Residents in low-lying areas or near small creeks and streams should remain on high alert.

Flash flooding is particularly dangerous overnight, as it can be hard to recognize flood hazards in the dark. Local authorities advise drivers to avoid flooded roads and take alternate routes. Particularly affected are Highway 40, I-70, and other low-lying local streets.

The flash flood warning remains in effect until 4 a.m., and additional rain could continue through early Monday. Residents are urged to stay indoors, avoid travel, and monitor local conditions for updates.
