Springfield, IL – With Fourth of July celebrations approaching, Illinois health officials are urging the public to prioritize safety after a sharp 44% rise in fireworks-related injuries was reported across the state last July.

According to the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH), injuries tied to fireworks jumped from 108 incidents reported by 34 hospitals in 2023 to 156 cases—including one fatality—across 45 hospitals in 2024. In response, the Illinois State Fire Marshal (OSFM) is requesting all medical providers statewide to report fireworks injuries through a centralized online form this year to improve data collection and response efforts.

“As we celebrate America’s birthday with family, friends, food and fireworks, I encourage my fellow Illinoisans to do a little advance planning to make the 4th of July weekend as healthy and as safe as possible,” said IDPH Director Dr. Sameer Vohra. “Dodge sunburn and heat-related illnesses by applying sunscreen, staying hydrated, wearing lightweight, light-colored clothing. And keep the handling of fireworks to the professionals.”

In addition to fireworks warnings, IDPH is reminding residents to take extra care with food preparation and storage during warm weather. Cold foods should be kept below 40°F, and meat should be cooked to safe internal temperatures. Cross-contamination should be avoided by keeping raw and cooked items separate.

For those spending time outdoors, officials recommend using EPA-approved insect repellents and checking for ticks regularly. To prevent heat-related illness, wear light-colored clothing, stay hydrated, and know the signs of heatstroke, such as confusion, dry skin, and high body temperature.

People with respiratory or heart conditions are also cautioned about fireworks smoke exposure and encouraged to wear protective masks or maintain distance from displays.

Additional summer safety guidance is available on IDPH’s website.
