Springfield, IL – Firefighters across Illinois will soon be better protected from harmful “forever chemicals” after Governor J.B. Pritzker signed a bipartisan bill into law this month. The measure, known as HB2409, addresses per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), which are linked to cancer and other health risks, and are commonly found in firefighting protective gear.

According to the Illinois General Assembly, the law requires that beginning January 1, 2026, manufacturers and sellers must disclose when firefighting equipment contains PFAS. By January 1, 2027, it will be illegal to sell, manufacture, or distribute firefighting gear in Illinois that intentionally includes the chemicals.

PFAS, often called “forever chemicals” because they do not break down in the environment or human body, have been used for decades to make firefighting gear more resistant to flames. Health officials and firefighter unions have raised alarms over the exposure risks, which studies suggest can accumulate in the body and increase the likelihood of cancer.

Lawmakers said the change is intended to protect those who risk their lives daily in hazardous conditions. “Firefighters deserve gear that shields them from flames, not chemicals that threaten their health,” Rep. Patrick Sheehan (R-Lockport), a co-sponsor of the bill, said in a statement.

The legislation drew strong bipartisan support, passing the House 114-0 in April and the Senate 58-0 in May. It amends the PFAS Reduction Act and was filed into law on August 15, 2025, as Public Act 104-0221.

Supporters, including the Associated Fire Fighters of Illinois, say the law represents a major step toward safer working conditions and will save lives by reducing long-term chemical exposure for thousands of first responders.
