Chicago, IL – A Red Flag Warning is in effect until 6 p.m. CST (7 p.m. EST) this evening for several counties across Illinois and Indiana due to dangerous fire weather conditions.

According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, the warning applies to Kankakee, Livingston, Iroquois, and Ford counties in Illinois, as well as Newton, Jasper, and Benton counties in Indiana. Strong southwest winds of 20 to 30 mph, with gusts reaching up to 45 mph, combined with relative humidity levels as low as 20 to 25 percent, create a high risk for fire spread.

Officials warn that any fire that starts in these conditions can spread rapidly. Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged, as dry conditions and strong winds will make controlling fires extremely difficult.

Residents are urged to take precautions by avoiding activities that could generate sparks or flames, such as burning leaves, using grills in open areas, or discarding cigarette butts carelessly. Local fire departments remain on high alert and encourage communities to report any signs of fire immediately.

The warning is expected to remain in place until conditions improve later this evening. Residents should stay updated on weather conditions and adhere to local fire restrictions.
