Quad Cities, IA/IL – Strong winds and rain are expected to sweep through the Quad Cities area today, bringing a heightened fire danger to Illinois and Iowa counties. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a warning for high wind gusts up to 40 mph, which will increase the risk of field fires in dry areas. Those near open fields, especially farmers, are urged to take precautions as gusty conditions could cause fires to spread rapidly.
According to the NWS, south winds between 15 to 25 mph will persist throughout the day, intensifying during the afternoon when rain chances also increase. Showers and possible thunderstorms are likely to begin around 4 p.m., continuing into the night. Drivers on highways, including the busy I-74 corridor, should exercise caution as the combination of wet roads and strong gusts could make conditions hazardous.
Tonight, thunderstorms may bring an additional 1 inch of rain, with showers tapering off by early Thursday morning. Temperatures will drop into the upper 50s tonight, with breezy conditions continuing.
The extended forecast shows a chance of scattered showers on Thursday, with temperatures peaking at 60°F before a cooler shift Friday, where a high of 57°F and clear skies are anticipated. Saturday looks sunny with a high near 62°F, providing a break from the stormy weather. However, showers are expected to return by Saturday night, lasting into Sunday with a 70% chance of rain.
Residents are advised to secure loose outdoor items and avoid burning today. The NWS warns that high-profile vehicles should take extra care on roadways, and anyone near open fields should be vigilant due to the elevated fire risk. Be sure to check local updates as conditions may change.
