Chicago, IL – Strong winds and dry conditions are raising fire concerns in northern Illinois this afternoon. Areas along and east of I-39 and north of I-80 face an increased risk of wildfires.

According to the Illinois State Fire Marshal, southwest winds will reach 20 to 30 mph, with gusts up to 55 mph near I-88. These conditions can quickly spread any fires that ignite. The highest fire risk is expected this afternoon.

The National Weather Service issued a Wind Advisory from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. for northern Illinois. Officials urge residents to secure outdoor items and avoid open flames. Disposing of smoking materials properly is also advised.

Authorities recommend postponing outdoor burning until conditions improve. Drivers should remain cautious in open areas due to strong crosswinds.
