Lanark, IL — Two firefighters from the Lanark Fire Protection District sustained injuries Saturday afternoon while responding to a grass fire near Chadwick in Carroll County.
According to a press release from the Lanark Fire Department, crews were dispatched around 2:25 p.m. on March 22 after receiving a mutual aid request from the Chadwick Fire Protection District. The fire was located at 21468 Shibley Road, just outside Chadwick, IL.
One firefighter was seriously injured during suppression efforts and was airlifted from the scene by OSF Life Flight to OSF St. Anthony’s Hospital in Rockford. As of 7 p.m. Saturday, the firefighter was undergoing surgery for injuries reportedly sustained at the fire scene.
A second firefighter was transported by Lanark EMS to Freeport Memorial Hospital and later transferred to OSF St. Anthony Hospital. Officials say this firefighter is currently in stable condition.
The Lanark Fire Protection District said updates on the firefighters’ conditions will be released pending family notifications and reports from medical staff.
Residents are reminded to remain vigilant during dry conditions as grass fires can escalate quickly. The department also extended gratitude to mutual aid agencies for their support during the incident.
