Waterloo, IL – A Prairie Du Rocher man has been charged after allegedly firing a handgun that resulted in the death of his 14-year-old daughter in July, according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department.
Authorities said deputies and EMS were dispatched on July 21 to a reported medical emergency on State Route 3 in Waterloo. The victim, identified as 14-year-old Emma Schultheis, was transported to a St. Louis-area hospital, where she later died despite life-saving efforts.
According to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department, investigators determined Emma died from a gunshot wound. The Illinois State Police Crime Scene Unit assisted with forensic processing during the investigation.
On September 2, Monroe County State’s Attorney Ryan Webb filed charges against two individuals. David A. Schultheis, 34, of Prairie Du Rocher, is charged with reckless discharge of a firearm, a Class 4 felony. Investigators allege he attempted to shoot a bird inside a brick building, firing through a window. The bullet allegedly struck his daughter outside.
A second suspect, Karen A. Schwarze, 58, of Valmeyer, is charged with concealment of a homicidal death, a Class 3 felony, and obstructing justice, a Class 4 felony. Authorities allege she concealed evidence and discouraged others from speaking with investigators during the early stages of the case.
According to the sheriff’s department, David Schultheis voluntarily surrendered at the Monroe County Jail, where he was processed and released pending court proceedings. Schwarze is expected to turn herself in to authorities soon.
In a statement, the sheriff’s office said the case reflects “the heartbreak and gravity” of losing a child and emphasized its commitment to truth, accountability and justice for the families involved.
All individuals are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
