Illinois – Dangerous cold conditions are gripping much of central and east central Illinois this morning as an Extreme Cold Warning remains in effect, bringing life-threatening wind chills and ongoing safety concerns.
According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, an Extreme Cold Warning continues until noon CST Sunday, with wind chills dropping as low as 30 below zero. A Cold Weather Advisory will then take effect from noon Sunday until 6 a.m. CST Monday, with wind chills still expected to reach 20 below zero.
The warning and advisory cover a wide portion of the state, including McLean, Champaign, Macon, Vermilion, Coles, Christian, Shelby, Douglas, Edgar, De Witt, Piatt, and Moultrie counties. Impacted cities include Bloomington-Normal, Champaign-Urbana, Decatur, Danville, Mattoon, Charleston, Paris, Clinton, Taylorville, Tuscola, Sullivan, and Shelbyville.
Meteorologists warn that exposed skin can develop frostbite in as little as 30 minutes, particularly during the early morning hours. Prolonged exposure to the cold may also lead to hypothermia if proper precautions are not taken.
Residents are urged to dress in multiple layers if going outdoors, including hats, gloves, and face coverings. Officials also stress the importance of checking frequently on older family members, neighbors, and those without reliable heat.
Heating safety is another concern during extreme cold. Authorities remind residents to use portable heaters correctly and never operate generators, grills, or fuel-burning devices indoors, as doing so can lead to carbon monoxide poisoning.
The dangerous cold affects a large portion of central Illinois, including areas near the Bloomington-Normal and Champaign-Urbana metro regions, and may continue to impact travel, outdoor work, and heating systems through early Monday.
Residents should continue monitoring updates from the National Weather Service and local emergency management officials as conditions evolve.
