Charleston, Illinois – Visitors heading to Lincoln Log Cabin State Historic Site this month can step directly into Illinois history, with live music and hands-on food traditions bringing the past to life during scheduled April programs.

According to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, the site will host two featured events highlighting folk culture and early American traditions. The first program begins at 2 p.m. Saturday, when historian and musician Bucky Halker presents a live performance centered on Woody Guthrie, blending music with storytelling about social issues reflected in his work.

Later in the month, a second event will focus on historic food practices. On Saturday, April 25, a program titled “The Frosted Republic” begins at 10 a.m., exploring Illinois’ role in shaping American cake and dessert traditions. The presentation will include visual materials and historical context tied to early baking influences.

The Lincoln Log Cabin site, located near Charleston, offers a preserved glimpse into 19th-century life, including the reconstructed home of Abraham Lincoln’s father. Outdoor grounds and nearby rural roads make it an accessible stop for families and history enthusiasts.

Both programs are part of a broader statewide initiative highlighting diverse cultural contributions to Illinois history. Additional events may be announced throughout the spring season.
