Arlington Heights, Illinois – Police in Arlington Heights will begin ramping up traffic enforcement this Thursday as part of a multi-week Independence Day safety campaign targeting impaired and unbuckled drivers.

According to the Arlington Heights Police Department, the campaign runs from June 20 through the early hours of July 7. Officers will join the Illinois State Police and over 200 agencies statewide for extra patrols and DUI enforcement during the busy summer holiday travel period.

The department urges residents and visitors to plan ahead and avoid driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. “If you’re driving, we ask that you don’t drink, use marijuana, or any other drugs,” the release said. Police will also be watching for seat belt violations and other infractions as part of the effort.

Officials recommend designating a sober driver, using ride-sharing services, or calling a taxi to get home safely. If you see an impaired driver, report it immediately by dialing 911.

The “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” and “Click It or Ticket” initiatives are funded by the Illinois Department of Transportation.

Warnings remain in effect through the morning of July 7.
