Springfield, IL – Drivers across Illinois are being reminded to use caution when encountering slow-moving farm equipment on the roads this week.
According to the Illinois State Police, vehicles displaying the triangular orange “Slow-Moving Vehicle” emblem are traveling at reduced speeds and require special care from motorists. With harvest season underway, farmers are moving equipment more frequently between fields and highways.
Authorities urge drivers to avoid distractions, slow down when they see flashing amber lights, and pass only with extreme caution. Police emphasized that motorists should allow extra space behind tractors or combines and never attempt to pass in a no-passing zone or within 100 feet of an intersection.
“Patience is critical,” police stated. “Farmers cannot always move over to let motorists pass safely.” Officials added that if a driver cannot see the farmer operating the machinery, the farmer likely cannot see them either, due to large equipment blocking rear visibility.
These reminders come at a time when rural traffic accidents often increase as heavy farm equipment shares the road with commuters. Authorities say careful driving can help prevent serious collisions during the fall harvest.
