Chicago, Illinois – Drivers across northern Illinois are waking up to dangerous road conditions this morning as dense fog reduces visibility to a quarter mile or less through 9 a.m.

According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, a Dense Fog Advisory is in effect for Winnebago, DeKalb, Kane, McHenry, La Salle, and several other counties. Visibility may vary rapidly, especially near low-lying areas and open fields, posing a significant risk on roadways including I-39, I-80, Route 34, and Route 38.

Communities such as Rockford, Aurora, DeKalb, and Ottawa are under the advisory. Morning commuters should slow down, use low-beam headlights, and allow extra space between vehicles. Emergency managers recommend avoiding non-essential travel until mid-morning, especially in rural zones where visibility can drop suddenly.

This is the sixth Dense Fog Advisory issued in Illinois this summer, and officials note that high humidity from recent storms is contributing to rapid overnight fog formation.

Conditions are expected to improve by mid-morning, but drivers should remain cautious during early travel hours. Updates will follow if conditions persist or expand into the afternoon.
