New Canton, IL – Illinois State Police are investigating a double homicide in Pike County after a shooting in New Canton early Thursday morning left three people dead, including the suspect.

According to the Pike County Sheriff’s Department, deputies were dispatched around 6 a.m. on Thursday, October 2, to the 300 block of Mississippi Street in New Canton for reports of a shooting. Responding officers found a female victim with gunshot wounds, who was flown to a hospital for treatment. Before transport, she identified the suspect as 67-year-old Gerald E. Waligorski of New Canton, who had allegedly made threats toward her parents.

Deputies then conducted a welfare check at the parents’ home in the 200 block of Monroe Street, where both were found deceased.

Authorities say Waligorski remained barricaded inside his Mississippi Street residence for nearly five hours. SWAT teams later entered the home with a search warrant and found him deceased.

Illinois State Police confirmed there are no further public safety concerns. The investigation is ongoing, and officials have not released the identities of the victims at this time.
