Chicago, IL – Tornadoes touched down across the Chicagoland area on Sunday evening, with confirmed sightings and damage reports coming from various locations, including a twister near Midway Airport.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) Chicago, survey teams are currently assessing the extent of the damage caused by multiple tornadoes. Early findings indicate at least six tornadoes, including an EF-0 tornado from La Grange to Cicero with peak winds of 75 mph and a 7.4-mile path length. Another EF-0 tornado hit Esmond in DeKalb County, traveling 3.4 miles with similar wind speeds.
An EF-0 tornado was also reported in St. Charles, with peak winds of 80 mph and significant damage from strong winds. Elburn in Kane County experienced a similar EF-0 tornado with winds up to 80 mph and a 1.4-mile path length.
Additionally, the NWS has identified an EF-1 tornado near Channahon and another on the Near West Side of Chicago extending to the far western portions of the Loop. The Bristol and Oswego areas also faced an EF-1 tornado, while Justice and Bridgeview experienced EF-0 tornado damage.
Survey teams noted that the damage assessment will be a multiday process, with preliminary track maps and additional details expected later today. Residents are advised to stay updated on the situation as more information becomes available.
