Pontiac, IL – Residents across parts of central Illinois and northwest Indiana are being warned to prepare for dangerously cold conditions tonight as a Cold Weather Advisory takes effect this evening and lasts through early Monday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, wind chills are expected to drop to around 20 degrees below zero between 6 p.m. Sunday and 6 a.m. Monday. The advisory includes Livingston, Ford, and Iroquois counties in Illinois, as well as Benton County in Indiana. Cities impacted include Pontiac, Watseka, Paxton, Fairbury, Gilman, Dwight, Oxford, Fowler, and Gibson City.

Forecasters say the combination of cold air and gusty winds will create hazardous wind chill values, making it feel significantly colder than actual air temperatures. These conditions increase the risk of frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes.

The advisory begins at 6 p.m. CST Sunday (7 p.m. EST in Indiana) and remains in effect until 6 a.m. CST Monday. Officials urge residents to limit time outdoors during the overnight hours and to take precautions if travel is necessary.

Those who must be outside are advised to wear multiple layers, including insulated coats, hats, gloves, and face coverings to reduce skin exposure. Extra care should also be taken with children, the elderly, and pets, who are more vulnerable to extreme cold.

Drivers should keep emergency supplies in their vehicles, including blankets and warm clothing, in case of unexpected delays or breakdowns. Residents are also encouraged to check on neighbors who may need assistance staying warm overnight.
