Springfield, Illinois – Life-threatening cold is bearing down on central Illinois, with dangerously low wind chills creating a serious frostbite risk for anyone exposed outdoors early Friday.
According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, a Cold Weather Advisory is in effect across much of central Illinois from early Friday morning through midday Saturday. Wind chills are expected to plunge between 15 and 25 below zero, cold enough to cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes, especially during the early morning hours.
The highest risk includes communities such as Springfield, Decatur, Champaign, Urbana, Bloomington, Normal, Jacksonville, Lincoln, Mattoon, Taylorville, and Danville. Even brief outdoor exposure without proper winter protection could quickly become dangerous for commuters, students, and outdoor workers. Rural areas may face added risk due to longer response times in emergencies.
Officials warn that prolonged exposure increases the threat of hypothermia in addition to frostbite. Vehicle batteries may struggle in the extreme cold, and unprotected pipes could freeze overnight as temperatures remain locked in well below normal.
Residents are urged to limit time outdoors, wear multiple layers including hats, gloves, and face coverings, and keep pets indoors. Neighbors are encouraged to check on elderly residents and anyone without reliable heat.
Cold Weather Advisories remain in effect into Saturday, and additional extensions are possible if the Arctic air mass lingers across central Illinois.
