Watseka, IL – A county-wide burn ban is back in place for Iroquois County starting Monday, Sept. 29, as dry weather and lack of rainfall continue to elevate fire risks.

According to the Iroquois County Emergency Management Agency, working with the Eastern Illinois Mutual Aid Fire Association and County Board, the ban prohibits all open burning. That includes landscape waste, agricultural debris, household trash, and garbage. Consumer fireworks are also included in the restrictions.

Ashkum Fire Chief Jeff Glenn, who also serves as MABAS Division 37 President, said the area has not seen enough rainfall to keep fires from spreading. “Everything is just tinder dry,” Glenn explained. Officials warned no significant rainfall is in the forecast, further justifying the renewed restrictions.

The ban remains in effect until further notice. Violators risk fines starting at $100 for the first offense. A second violation could result in doubled penalties, along with the cost of extinguishing any resulting fire, according to officials.

Residents across Iroquois County, including Watseka and surrounding communities, are urged to follow the order for safety. Fire chiefs stressed cooperation is key to preventing potentially dangerous wildfires during the ongoing dry spell.
