Chicago, IL – An arctic air mass continues to grip Illinois, bringing dangerously low wind chills between -20°F and -35°F through Wednesday morning. Residents along major corridors like I-55 and I-80 should exercise caution as frostbite can occur on exposed skin in 20 to 30 minutes.
According to the National Weather Service, wind chills will remain below -20°F through this afternoon, with the coldest conditions expected north and west of La Salle to Waukegan. A Cold Weather Advisory is in effect until 2 p.m. Tuesday, urging people to limit time outdoors, cover exposed skin, and bring pets indoors.
Snow is forecast to develop late Wednesday afternoon and continue into the evening. Accumulation could reach up to an inch, especially in northern counties. Wind gusts may reduce visibility on roadways, including I-80 and I-90, increasing the risk of slippery travel conditions.
Looking ahead, temperatures will climb slightly, with highs near 22°F on Wednesday and 24°F on Thursday. By Friday, sunny skies are expected, but lows will remain in the teens overnight. Weekend temperatures are forecast to return to seasonal norms.
Residents are reminded to check on elderly neighbors, ensure pipes are insulated, and prepare for potential travel disruptions Wednesday evening. For updates, visit the National Weather Service or local emergency management websites.
