Chicago, IL – A severe weather alert has been issued for the shores of Lake Michigan, affecting both Illinois and Northwest Indiana. Strong and gusty onshore winds are expected to create waves reaching up to 10 feet, posing a significant threat to swimmers and boaters alike. The National Weather Service in Chicago has warned that these hazardous conditions will persist from Tuesday through Wednesday afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service, life-threatening waves and currents will impact the entire coastline from the southern end of Lake Michigan. The high waves are expected to generate dangerous swimming conditions, with officials strongly advising the public to stay out of the water. The beaches most at risk include those in Chicago, as well as those in Northwest Indiana, where swimming conditions will be particularly treacherous.

In addition to the swim risk, hazardous boating conditions are expected, making it unsafe for small watercraft to venture out. The National Weather Service advises all beachgoers and boaters to heed warnings and follow any posted signs and closures. Conditions are expected to improve by Wednesday afternoon, but until then, residents and visitors are urged to exercise extreme caution and avoid entering the water.
