Illinois Boy Overcome by Vermilion River Current Still Missing

Danville, IL – A 12-year-old boy is missing after being pulled under by the current in the Vermilion River on Monday evening.

According to Danville Police, two juveniles reported the incident around 8:11 p.m. near the 100 block of Commercial Street. The boy was swimming near the riverbank when he was overcome by the strong current. Despite immediate search efforts, authorities were unable to locate the boy.

The Vermilion County Sheriff’s Department Dive Team joined the search at 8:16 p.m., but the operation was suspended at 10:14 p.m. due to severe weather conditions. Efforts resumed early Tuesday morning with additional support from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. Boats and divers have been deployed, and members of the public have also assisted in the search. However, authorities caution against entering the river due to unsafe conditions.

Danville Police continue to investigate the incident. No further information has been released at this time.
